Gateway to the Fjords

For our intimate fjord cruise, Bergen is the ideal place to begin. This beautiful mountain-ringed port, often called the Gateway to the Fjords, began as a small village founded by King Olav Kyree in the 11th century and has grown into Norway’s second-largest city.

At the heart of Bergen lies Vågen Bay, home to the UNESCO-listed Bryggen quarter with its charming cobblestone streets and boutique shops. Nearby, the famous fish market offers a perfect place to enjoy fresh local seafood.

Once aboard, meet your ship’s Expedition Team, who will guide you throughout your journey in the Norwegian fjords. Settle into your comfortable home at sea, enjoy your first meal onboard, and watch Bergen fade into the horizon as the ship departs at 8:00 PM, sailing south toward Norway’s majestic fjords.

Rosendal & the Heart of Hardanger

Sail into the beautiful Kvinnheradsfjord, a branch of the renowned Hardangerfjord, where steep glacier-carved mountains rise dramatically above the water and waterfalls cascade down the cliffs. Once an important route for farmers and traders, these fjords still reflect the peaceful rhythm of Norway’s coastal life.

At its heart lies Rosendal, a charming village surrounded by orchards and the snowy peaks of the Folgefonna Glacier. Visit the historic Barony Rosendal, Norway’s only manor house, stroll through tranquil gardens, explore local art galleries, or enjoy coffee and homemade treats in the garden café. Nearby, the Folgefonna National Park Center offers insight into the region’s glaciers and dramatic natural landscapes.

Stavanger & the Fjord of Light

Today we sail through Lysefjord, one of Norway’s most dramatic waterways. Towering cliffs rise more than 3,000 feet above the sea, and from the deck you may glimpse Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), the iconic plateau that symbolizes Norway’s rugged natural beauty. The fjord’s name, meaning “Fjord of Light,” reflects the pale granite cliffs that shine in changing light, sculpted by glaciers over thousands of years.

Later, arrive in Stavanger, a lively coastal city where Viking heritage meets modern culture. Wander the charming Old Town with its white wooden houses, cafés, and galleries, or explore the waterfront lined with museums and seafood restaurants. You may also browse local shops for Norwegian crafts and wool sweaters, or visit nearby Flor og Fjære, a small island garden filled with colorful blooms.

Art Nouveau by the Sea

Arrive in Ålesund, one of Norway’s most beautiful coastal cities, rebuilt in elegant Art Nouveau style after a devastating fire in 1904. Pastel-colored buildings with ornate towers and decorative details line the waterfront, set across a cluster of islands surrounded by mountains and sea.

Stroll through cobbled streets and waterfront cafés, visit the Jugendstilsenteret Museum to learn about the city’s design heritage, or climb the steps to Mount Aksla for sweeping views of the town and the Sunnmøre Alps. You may also enjoy fresh seafood or browse local boutiques for Norwegian crafts.

Glaciers, Valleys & Village Life

Sail into the spectacular Nordfjord, one of Norway’s most scenic fjords, stretching deep inland through glacier-carved valleys and mirror-like lakes. Along the shoreline, red boathouses, green pastures, and forested slopes create a peaceful coastal landscape, while waterfalls tumble down from high mountain plateaus.

At the fjord’s innermost point lies Olden, a tranquil village surrounded by dramatic mountains and the turquoise waters of the Oldeelva River. From here, you can explore the nearby Jostedalsbreen Glacier, the largest on mainland Europe, or take scenic excursions to glacial lakes and breathtaking viewpoints.

This morning we return to Bergen, the Gateway to the Fjords, where your journey through Norway’s spectacular western fjords comes full circle. Take time to explore the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district, wander the lively fish market, visit local museums, or ride the Fløibanen funicular for sweeping views over the city and sea.

As you say farewell to the ship, crew, and fellow travellers, reflect on the unforgettable landscapes you’ve experienced—glittering fjords, cascading waterfalls, peaceful villages, and endless horizons of sea and sky.
