Itinerary

Board your overnight flight to Medellín, Colombia.

Upon early morning arrival in Medellín, you will meet and transfer to hotel to drop off your bags before beginning your exploration of this vibrant city. Start with a visit to Botero Plaza followed by a guided walking tour of downtown Medellín. Ride the city’s iconic tram and cable car system, and afterwards, visit a local market to sample an array of fresh fruits and authentic street food.

Today, we journey to the colourful town of Guatapé, located approximately two hours from Medellín. Marvel at the breathtaking landscapes before climbing El Peñol Rock, a striking 220-metre-high monolith with 740 steps to the top. Enjoy panoramic views as your reward. Following the climb, unwind with a short boat trip on the reservoir.

Discover Medellín’s remarkable urban transformation at Comuna 13. Stroll through the celebrated graffiti art district, savour a refreshing mango popsicle, and experience the innovative outdoor escalators that have revitalized this neighbourhood. A local guide will explain the significance of the art and the community’s inspiring story. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Later, visit a coffee farm within the city limits to learn about the bean-to-brew process behind Colombia’s world-renowned coffee. Dinner at local restaurant featuring lively ambiance, live music, and fine cuisine.

This morning, visit Colombia’s largest private orchid collection, home to over 5,000 varieties of flowers. After lunch near the airport, board your flight to Cartagena. Upon arrival, you will transfer to your hotel and check in. In the late afternoon, enjoy a sunset stroll and a guided walking tour of Cartagena’s enchanting walled city. Dinner at a local restaurant.

Visit the impressive San Felipe Castle, the “Old Shoes” monument, and the serene La Popa Monastery. After a short walk, enjoy your lunch. Spend the afternoon exploring the vibrant neighbourhood of Getsemaní and Trinidad Square, a key site in Colombia’s independence movement. Enjoy a rum and chocolate tasting experience led by an expert, showcasing the harmonious pairing of these Colombian specialties.

Spend the morning at your leisure before being transferred to the pier in the afternoon to embark on your river cruise. After settling into your stateroom, enjoy a guided tour of the Getsemaní neighbourhood, known for its vibrant street art, colourful architecture, and delightful local cuisine. Afterwards, return to the ship and begin your magical journey along the Magdalena River.

This morning, experience the historic town of Palenque, recognized as the first “free town” in the Americas. Founded by those who escaped slavery during colonial times, Palenque has preserved its powerful spirit and traditions over centuries. In 1713, the Spanish crown issued a Royal Decree officially granting freedom to its inhabitants. Immerse yourself in the town’s vibrant culture, so unique that UNESCO has declared Palenque a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. A highlight of your visit will be a special musical performance celebrating Palenque’s distinctive rhythms. Later in the day, visit the charming town of Calamar, located at the entrance to the Canal del Dique. First settled in 1840, Calamar is rich in history. Tour its beautiful streets by paola (a traditional bicycle taxi for two) and visit landmarks such as the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción.

Spend the morning in Santa Bárbara de Pinto, situated along the banks of the Mompox arm of the Magdalena River. Stroll through this traditional town, visit the Santa Bárbara Church, and admire the region’s fine hand-crafted goods. In the afternoon, cruise onward to the island town of Mompox. Upon arrival, be welcomed with open arms and the soulful sounds of an exclusive live jazz performance by local musicians.

Often described as a town frozen in time, Mompox offers a glimpse into the colonial past of Colombia. Founded in 1540 as an important Spanish trading post, Mompox became a refuge for treasure and gold, safely guarded against pirate raids on the coast. Spanish artisans left a legacy of intricate craftsmanship, and the town is now renowned for its exquisite filigree jewelry. Journey into the surrounding Ciénaga Pijiño wetlands, exploring a vast ecological reserve home to rich flora and fauna. In the afternoon, take a guided walking tour through Mompox’s stunning colonial churches, vibrant streets, and enjoy local culinary specialties such as capa cheese and butifarra. Mompox is sure to be one of the highlights of your journey along the Magdalena River.

Say goodbye to Mompox and cruise through the stunning La Mojana region of the Magdalena River. Discover the rich history of cumbia, a global music and dance born from African roots and enriched by American and European influences. End the day with a special cumbia performance by local artists.

Spend the day near Magangué, surrounded by nature, as you enjoy a birdwatching tour featuring species found only in this part of Colombia.

In the morning, visit the Floating Village of Nueva Venecia, a community accessible only by boat. With its colourful colonial houses, vibrant architecture, and a protected natural sanctuary, Nueva Venecia offers an unforgettable glimpse into a unique way of life. Tour the village, meet local artisans, learn traditional fishing techniques, and sample local delicacies. Later, continue to the seaside city of Barranquilla, a lively cultural centre known for its musicians, writers, and artists. Visit notable landmarks such as the Bocas de Cenizas, where the Magdalena River meets the Caribbean Sea, and the Carnaval Museum, showcasing the region’s rich festive traditions. Bid farewell to your ship and crew as you disembark and transfer to the airport for your flight to Bogotá. Upon arrival, you will transfer to your hotel for check-in. After settling in, enjoy lunch near Mount Monserrate. In the afternoon, visit the renowned Gold Museum and explore the charming Candelaria colonial neighbourhood. Return to the hotel for an evening at your leisure.

Following breakfast, visit the spectacular Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, an engineering marvel constructed by miners deep within a salt mine. This awe-inspiring place of worship was built in honour of the Virgin of the Rosary of Guasá, protector of miners. Afterwards, enjoy lunch in Zipaquirá before continuing to the Guatavita Lagoon. This sacred place for indigenous people is home to the mythic El Dorado legend, where the chief swam in waters full of gold and precious stones. Farewell dinner at one of Bogotá’s famous restaurants.

Transfer to airport this morning for your return flight home.
